Wi-Fi Everywhere

Of course, it had to happen first close to the Silicon Valley. On January 5th, 2007, the Mayor of San Francisco announced that this would be the first major city in the US to offer free universal wireless internet access. The agreement reached between the City and EarthLink will provide wireless internet access at no cost throughout San Francisco. You can find more details about the new service here.
Now, is that the future of every important city in the world? When will this happen?
Meanwhile, there is another way of having free Wi-Fi “everywhere”. We are talking about the Fon network. Fon is, according to their website, “the world’s largest Wi-Fi community.” With Fon, if you have Wi-Fi at home and share it, you get free Wi-Fi around the world (if other Fon users are available). In conclusion, until every city has free Wi-Fi everywhere provided by the government, Fon is an interesting way of enjoying a similar service.
